Champions League: Chelsea Set Up Final Against Manchester City
The Champions League finalist first-timers, Manchester City, will be having their first litmus test against a very familiar side and league mates, Chelsea, in the final on the 29 May at Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel could not but admitted Real Madrid were tough nuts to crack for his team and that their opponents well-deserved the victory having had fair domination of the game over them, but if there was a trick to what gave them the win, he mentioned that it could only be that his men were "dangerous" making a fastbreak.
Chelsea, who sealed their place in the final tonight stunned their Li Liga rivals Real Madrid by claiming a 2-0 victory in the semi-final second-leg (Aggr. of 3-2) for their third appearance in the final. However, that came off from good saves made by goalkeeper Edouard Mendes for denying the Spaniards twice in the first half that would have thrown his side behind their opponents.
"They deserved to win," said Tuchel. "First off, it's difficult because Real had a lot of possession and they made us suffer, but we were dangerous with counter-attacks, and never lost the hunger, never lost their desire to defend."
Mendes' effort to hold on to the 1-1 draw from the first-leg paid off when Timo Werner headed into the net a lofted ball from Kai Havertz. Both players were amongst the five players signed to the team by Frank Lampard last summer.
Having the lead from the first half gave Blues the upper hands in domination after the break and were twice close to doubling the lead by Havertz and Kante N'Golo before Mason Mount, who had missed a chance later tapped in from close range a pass from Christian Pulisic with five minutes remaining on the stopwatch.
Just as pep Guardiola ended the Champions League final appearance jinx for City, Chelsea will also be making their first appearance since 2012.
