Europa League: Aubameyang Nets Brace To Lead Arsenal To Last 16
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has set off Arsenal into the Europa League Last 16 by contributing two goals that canceled out Benfica's lead as the side's comeback from behind to clinch a 3-2 win over the Portuguese side.
A superb finish from Gunners' captain by lobbing a through pass from Saka Bukayo over Helton Haille opened the scoring for an aggregate of 2-1 before a brilliant finish from a free-kick by Cupido Goncalves leveled the scores for Benfica late into the first half.
Minutes after Aubameyang's goal was ruled out for being in an offside position, a defensive error by Dani Ceballos landed Ferreira Silva the chance to double the lead for Benfica. That lead was short-lived after Kieran Tierney equalized for the team with individual effort after Willian found him with a pass inside the box.
Saka's brilliant handling of the ball saw him picked Aubameyang out with a well-aimed cross for him to nod home from close range late into the second half.
Benfica had the advantage from the start having entered the game with a 1-1 draw from the first leg, however, resilience paid off for the Premier League side and Aubameyang found awesome support from Saka's assists to get those goals.
Arsenal have now reached the Last 16 of the competition three in four appearances in a row. Though Aubameyang failed in the first leg, he now has a total of four goals in the competition after scoring a brace against Benfica.
