Australian Open: Serena Williams Says "I'm Done" After Losing To Naomi Osaka In Semis
While expectations were that Serena Williams was on course to equal Margaret Court's record for all-time biggest in WTA with 24 Grand Slam titles, Naomi Osaka turned out to be the player set to extend her Grand Slam streak to four.
Serena was disappointed to shake hands with the Japanese ace as the loser in the semi-final after being outlasted in straight sets on Thursday. Grand Slam remained elusive to the American since she gave birth to her daughter in 2017.
The mother-of-one could not hold back her emotions as she walked out of the press in a post-match conference saying "I don't know. I'm done" after her title bid for the 2021 Australian Open title was met with a shock defeat, Naomi.
"The difference today was errors. I made so many errors," she admitted having committed 21 unforced errors hit 12 winners as against Naomi who hit 20 winners and won all four break advantages had during the match.
The 2018 US Open champion, Naomi, claimed an early 2-0 lead and won straight seven out of eight games to pick the first set with a strong forehand shot. She established her control of the second set after winning a break to take a 5-4 lead and wrapped up by winning a match point on Serena's netted backhand return.
Speaking after the match, Naomi said her expectation is to play tennis "forever" and Serena being her inspiration she said, "Every time I play her, I feel like it's something I'll definitely remember a lot."
