Australian Open: Novak Djokovic Wins Record Ninth Title In Melbourne

Novak Djokovic is at another level in the Australian Open title dominance after launching his title quest for the new season with a record-setting ninth title at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

Daniil Medvedev was denied his career first Grand Slam title quest by Djokovic defending the title in straight sets 7-5 6-2 6-2 win. The victory handed the Serb his 18th Grand Slam title leaving him behind only Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the all-time biggest Grand Slam winners.

The nine-time champion gained an early lead from the opening set breaking to win three straight games before the Russian rallied back and closed up the gap. Nevertheless, he fought on to win the set. He eased through the remaining sets winning 7-in-11 break advantages while Daniil was so frustrated he smashed his racket ahead of his defeat.

Meanwhile, Djokovic had informed Medvedev that he is going to find it easy in the final Russian player Aslan Karatsev in the semis. He delivered on his words and seemingly control the match to the end.

Medvedev suffered his third consecutive defeat to the 33-year-old, who fell on the court in celebration of his triumph for retaining dominance of the tournament for three straight seasons.
