Conor McGregor Suffer Shock Defeat To Dustin Poirier
Conor McGregor suffered a disappointing outing on his return to UFC, losing on his rematch fight with Dustin Poirier on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
The Irish fighter who later said he is "gutted" over the defeat an had promised to deliver victory in the first round, was knocked out in two-round by the American. The two-time world champion suffered a takedown and pin-down in the first but retaliated landed a series of shoulder strikes.
"I felt stronger than him, but his leg kicks were good," said McGregor. "I didn't adjust. My leg was badly compromised. I'ver never experienced those low calf kicks, and I wasn't as comfortable as I needed to be."
McGregor had retired from mixed martial art three times but his desire for a rematch with Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov encouraged him to come out of retirement. However, his plan to beat Poirier like he did in 2014 turned out to be a massive career setback for him.
Poirier brilliantly stepped up his game landing good strikes followed by an uppercut on the former champion that sent him wobbling in the ring and finished him of with a right hook in the second round.
"I have no excuses," McGregor continued. "It was a phenomenal performance by Dustin. I have to dust it off and come back. I need activity, don't get away with being inactive in this business."
