Wonder Woman 1984 Makes Humble Debut With $38.5M Gross
The second entry of Gal Gadot's film Wonder Woman 1984 fell short of expectations after taking in a gross of $38.5m on its debut weekend despite screening from 39 countries.
Since the coronavirus outbreak, cinemas have been badly hit with filmmakers having to choose between postponing film release date or releasing films on digital screening platforms. This factor, without a doubt, has impacted the performance of Wonder Woman 1984's debut.
Unlike the first episode, the film's performance in China was really despite making almost half of the total cume at $18.8m. Meanwhile, its predecessor made a massive $37.6m on debut in the same country where it closed at $90.5m.
Gadot teased about the film being available to stream in a tweet accompanied by her picture from the film. She wrote in the tweet, "Just missing my Santa hat 😛. #WW84 out in CinemaSafe theatres and on @hbomax on Christmas Day!"
Nevertheless, Warner Bros. later confirmed the film will be available on-demand streaming platforms from next year and said in a statement that the move is "in recognition of varying current market restrictions and to service the massive fan interest."
