Formula One: Sergio Perez Joins Red Bull In New Contract
Sergio Perez has made a switch from Racing Point to join Red Bull after signing a new contract with the racing team starting from next season as the second-driver to lead driver, Max Verstappen.
The Mexican was already in his last season with his former team that dropped renewing his contract in September to sign out-going Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, who also was replaced with Carlos Sainz by his former team.
"Having taken our time to evaluate all the relevant data and performances we have decided that Sergio is the right driver to partner Max for 2021 and look forward to welcoming him to Red Bull Racing," said the team boss Christian Horner.
Horner also added that the team is grateful for all the contributions made by Alex Albion, who was Max's partner and that he will remain as an "important part" of the team functioning as "Test and Reserve Driver" from next season.
Sergio won the first-ever Grand Prix in his career at the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain during which Lewis Hamilton was ruled out for testing positive for Covid-19 symptoms - the Briton was replaced by Williams' George Russell.
