Liverpool Sign Brazilian Youngster As New Goalkeeper
Marcelo was part of the Under-17 that won the World Cup trophy for his home country last year and had since gained Reds' attention for a transfer. He was unveiled at the club today as a newly-signed goalkeeper in a £1.8million contract.
"I saw him for the first time in the World Cup squad," Reds' head of goalkeeping, John Achterberg, told the club's official website.
After monitoring him at the World Cup and also at his club Fluminense, Achterberg confessed that he and his coaching crew were impressed. To make contact with him directly, he revealed they first reached out to his teammate who is also the brother of Reds' goalkeeper Allison as the means to gain access to him.
Achterberg added, "He was at Fluminense; we got some games to look at, all the other goalie coaches also look at it - Jack [Robinson] and the Academy coaches Mark [Morris] and Taff [Neil Edward]. And, of course, I speak to the gaffer and the rest of the coaching department here."
