Lewis Hamilton Open Up On His Racing Future

Lewis Hamilton has opened up on his future with Mercedes and he is convinced of spending more years at the racing team but be might not be "a long time" before he stops racing - the Briton has until December left in his current contract with his team.

Mercedes is expected to offer Hamilton a three-year deal with an annual salary of £40million that will run until 2023 amidst a proposed regulation that cap the maximum salary F1 star drivers can earn from a contract at £22million - the regulation is expected to be in effect from 2023 and has been signed by all racing team principals.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the six-time champion revealed the team principal Toto Wolff has been in talks with him since Hungarian Grand Prix last season, but the discussion was impeded by the coronavirus lockdown, otherwise, it would have been an already done deal.

"I wanted to give myself the space mentally to really think about what I want to do, think if there's any adjustments for me and for the team," said Hamilton. "how can we get more out of each other - how can I get then an easier time."

Hamilton passed the previous record set F1 biggest race win by the retired driver, Michael Schumacher when he won his 92nd race at the Portuguese Grand Prix last weekend. The race win was also his ninth so far this season.

"It's definitely not going to be a long time before I stop," Hamilton added. "So this is a period of time where I've got to slowly work out what the future holds."

The 35-year-old is set for a record-equalling seventh F1 world championship as he title win leads by 77 points over the nearest rival Valterri Bottas.
