Iga Swiatek has become the first Grand Slam winner from Poland after winning the final of the French Open with straight-sets 6-4 6-1 win against American player Sofia Kenin.

The teenager had made her presence felt at the tournament when she ousted top seed and former world number one Simona Halep in straight sets in the fourth round.

"I'm so happy. I'm so happy my family was here finally," she said afterward. "Two years ago I won a junior Grand Slam and now I'm here. It feels like such a short time. I'm just overwhelmed."

Despite being an unseeded player who is ranked 52nd, the polish player defiled the odds to become the youngest women's singles title winner in Garros Roland after Monic Seles 1992.

Sofia started out strong into the match after dropping two opening games in the first set but succumbed to the Polish champion pressure after battling deuces in 4-4. The 19-year-old claimed the title without dropping a set in seven match - she dropped 28 games throughout the tournament.
