French Open: Diego Schwartzmann Outlasts Dominic Thiem In Thrilling Five-Setter To Meet Rafael Nadal
Diego Schwartzmann fought through a tough and five-seter five round to outlast Dominic Thiem in the quarter-final of Garros Roland and stands to set up a semi-final match against Rafael Nadal.
For the Argentine to make it past Dominic, a lot of stamina and tenacity was required in the blistering cold on Court Philippe Chatrier, as they both battled through three tiebreaks in five hours of play before it ended in 7-6(1) 5-7 6-7(6) 7-6(5) 6-2.
"In the end, I gave everything I had out there," said Dominic on losing out on his third ATP major singles head to head series against Schwartzmann that was his first time playing over five hours.
Dominic was off to claim a decisive win against Schwartzmann in the third set but was fought off by engaging slices and drop shot skills to deny the Austrian match points and forced the match to progress into a fourth set.
While Schwartzmann remained steadfast in the fourth set, Dominic was showing off fatigue against his opponent who converted his tenth breakpoint advantage with a backhand return shot to secure the victory.
"I was going a little crazy and I was screaming at myself because I had so many chances," Schwartzmann admitted to anxiety describing the victory as one that is "very important" to him.
