Formula One: Honda To Quit After 2021 Season
Honda will quit its participation in Formula 1 by the end next season over the need to focus on the "realization of carbon neutrality" for new engines and technology by 2050.
The Japanese automaker makes engines for two F1 racing teams - Red Bull and AlphaTauri - which means they both will have to sort out for new engine makers to replace Honda.
Meanwhile, Red Bull is just a season into the two-year contract signed with Honda after quitting their previous suppliers Renault for the Japanese in November last year.
"The shifting focus within the automotive industry has led to Hinda's decision to re-deploy their resources and we understand and respect the reasoning behind this," Red Bull team principal Christian Horner responded to Honda leaving the sport next season.
However, Horner explained that the team will not be distracted by the decision and as they are well prepared and equipped to respond" to the challenge that may have to foist upon them. Nevertheless, they are proud of the successes they have both jointly recorded having had five race wins and 15 podium positions together.
He added, "Our joint focus for the remainder of the 2020 and 2021 season are unchanged, to fight for victories and challenge for the championship."
