Eifel Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Wins to Equal Michael Schumacher's Record
Lewis Hamilton has reached a record-equalling feat of 91 wins leveling with Michael Schumacher on all-time F1 race wins having won the Eifel Grand Prix on Sunday. .
Despite starting behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas who nipped him to claimed the pole at the qualifying, the Briton dominated the race to be fastest while the Finn driver's car suffered an engine failure.
Bottas had maintained the lead through to Lap 13 warding off Hamilton from racing past him, but the unfortunate struck when his car's power unit failed, leaving his teammate and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen to race on in the lead.
Hamilton expressed his joy in reaching the milestone which was first reached by Schumacher, who he revealed is his childhood idol and admitted it was an unthinkable record for him to equal.
He added, "Seeing his dominance for so long, I don't think anyone - and especially me - thought I'd be anywhere near Michael's records. It's an incredible honor."
Verstappen finished the race in the second position whilst Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo nipped Racing Point's Sergio Peres to make his first podium appearance of the season. McLaren's Carlos Sainz finished behind Perez in the fifth position.
