Cologne Indoors: Alexander Zverev Beats Felix Auger-Alliassime To Win Title
Alexander Zverev has snapped his title-drought for his first of the season against Felix Auger-Alliassime at the Cologne Indoors final on Sunday.
The German ace outclassed his opponent in straight sets 6-3 6-3 on the Canadian third final appearance this season - he lost in the Rotterdam Open final to French player Gael Monfils and to Open13, France to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Zverev saved four out of five break advantages faced against Felix while he won a break on his serve at 5-3 to win the first and denied the Canadian two breaks in the second set to consolidate on his control at 5-2. Felix later struck a forehand shot wide to hand the German the needed match point.
"I had a very tough final in New York and the next final I played here, I wanted to come out and play my best tennis," said Zverev who ended his 17-month wait for ATP title, and then told his opponent that "very very very soon" he will lift his first career winner's trophy.
The 23-year-old reached the final of the US Open and lost to Dominic Thiem in a thrilling five-setter. Earlier in the season, he made it to the semi-final of the Australian Open and was ousted by the Austrian in four sets.
