Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu Resigns
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has finally given in to pressure and handed in his resignation from the club on Tuesday after serving in the role for six years.
It was understood that Bartomeu tendered his resignation after an emergency meeting with other directors and the reason for his stepping down remained undisclosed.
"President Josep Maria Bartomeu announces the resignation of the FC Barcelona Board of Directors," the club confirmed the resignation via its official Twitter account.
The 57-year-old had reinstated his commitment to the club, having said that leaving the club is something that never occurred to him the day before his sudden exit from the Catalan club.
It has been turbulent at the club since they lost their La Liga title defense to Real Madrid last term followed by a humbling 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The outcome of that floppy performance resulted in the dismissal of former head coach Quiqen Setien and former sporting director Eric Abidal. On the appointment of new manager Ronald Koeman, Barca embarked on the selling of players in a quest to restructure the team.
