US Open: Kyle Edmund Suffers Early Exit Against Novak Djokovic

British ace Kyle Edmund did not get the chance to make it through to the third round at the US Open despite causing an early scare for Novak Djokovic in a four-set match.

Djokovic was forced to take defeat in the first set with Kyle outlasting him in the tiebreak but only for him to rally and claimed three sets to emerge as the winner by 6-7(5-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 extending his unbeaten run to 25 consecutive matches.

"Kyle played a fantastic first set, didn't do much wrong. It was anyone's game for a set and a half. Then I started to read it better, serve better," said the top-seeded player. "Kyle returned well, played well from the back of the court. There were quite a few breaks of serve."

Kyle unleashed the best of his skill in engaging forehand shots in the opener and at 6-5 pushed the set into a tiebreak. The Brit claimed two set points at 5-5 in the tiebreak to win. Until now, the world number one has been undefeated in tiebreaks in the 2020 season.

After the beautiful display of skills in the opener, Djokovic had a cruise through the remaining sets over Kyle for an emphatic victory in the second-round match that lasted for over three hours.

"Usually, his forehand is a weapon but his backhand was very strong. Very solid," Djokovic commended his opponent. "After winning the second set I was more comfortable and I was pleased with my set as well. Overall, it was a very good test and I'm happy to come through."

The 17-time Grand Slam winner extended his lead to 6-in-7 in head-to-head counts against Kyle in his quest for his fourth title at the tournament. He will face in the third round German player Jan-Lennard Struff.
