John Boyega Condemns Disney's Treatment Of His Character In Star Wars

John Boyega who is otherwise known as the character Finn in the Star Wars films, has expressed his displeasure in Disney over how his role in the franchise is been handled. In his opinion, shoving his character aside in the franchise does not speak well of diversity.

The actor will be GQ's cover picture for the October issue and has a lot to get off his chest concerning Disney and his role in the Star Wars franchise. He wants the studios to understand how he was treated in the film had racial undertone to it, unlike other characters.

He did acknowledge taking up a role film was an opportunity for him, however, it does not really mean everything about was necessarily right with him in an industry he believed was not ready for him.

"What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side. It's not good. I'll say it straight up," he told the magazine.

Boyega was outspoken against what he perceived to be wrong with the killing of George Floyd in the United States at a Black Lives Matter rally in London's Hyde Park. He gave an emotional speech to the crowds at the rally, feared his career would be over because of that but he soon received support from some filmmakers.

He did not spare his encounter with being treated differently in the franchise despite being amongst the few cast members who had the best piece of the franchise in term of experience.

"I'm the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race," he pointed out on racial issues with being cast in the film. "It makes you angry with a process like that. It makes you much more militant: it changes you."

"Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media saying, "Black this and black that and you shouldn't be a Stormtrooper."
