F1 Stewards Fined Lewis Hamilton, Remove Penalty Points Given At Russian GP
F1 stewards have rescinded penalty points given to Lewis Hamilton and fined him instead for an offense committed during the Russian Grand Prix final on Sunday.
Hamilton was given a two-point penalty on his license over an accuse of practicing outside the designated area ahead of the final race in Sochi. The Mercedes was also given two five-second penalties which he served during the race.
Explaining reasons for repealing the verdict, the stewards in a statement blamed the driver's racing team for the offense committed for allowing him to practice in the areas they have not approved of. To that effect, the penalties on Hamilton's license was removed and he was given a £22,815 fine instead.
"Based on this information the Stewards replace document 47 with this decision and therefore remove the penalty points imposed," they clarified in the statement.
The 10-second racing penalty given the six-time champion denied him equaling Michael Schumacher's record of 91 F1 career race wins and finished third behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Valterri Bottas both of who finished second and first respectively.
