Europa League: Sevilla Haul Out Manchester United To Reach Final
Manchester United's only hope for a title just got dashed by Sevilla who staged a comeback to deny them qualification for the Europa League final by claiming a 2-1 win.
Despite having a better chance of winning after Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty early into the game, the Spaniards were resilient and found an equalizer before the half break and completed the victory in the remaining 12 minutes of play.
Sevilla recovered from a goal deficit when Reguilon's square pass found Suso for a finish from close range for the equalizer. Though United had better possession of the game afterward, they failed to convert multiple chances the had which could have given them the victory.
Nevertheless, the Spaniards survived the onslaught from United until late into the second interval when Jesus Navas' killer cross found Luuk de Jong out for a header which he nodded home in the midst of four defenders.
The elimination of United in the semi-final was their third at the stage in their campaign for a title - they were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the semi-finals by Man. City and in the FA Cup by Chelsea.
Also, Red Devils who were the only English team remaining in the competition were eliminated by the same Spaniards, Sevilla, who hauled out their counterparts Wolverhampton in a 1-0 win on Tuesday.
Sevilla will face the winner between Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk having reached the final which will be held in Cologne, Germany on Friday 21 August.
