Europa League Final: Sevilla Win Sixth Title In Victory Over Inter Milan
Sevilla have claimed their sixth Europa League trophy in a comeback that ended in 3-2 victory over Inter Milan as Romelu Lukaku's own goal ruined the Italians' title chase with sixteen minutes remaining.
Inter had led the scoring from the fifth minutes from a penalty converted by Lukaku who later let his right-foot in the way of Diego Carlos' bicycle kicked and deflected the ball right into the left bottom of the post for the Spaniards' winning goal.
Sevilla recovered from a goal deficit with Luuk de Jong scoring twice in the first half after Lukaku put the Italians in the lead. Jong headed in the equalizer from Jesus Navas' cross and put the side in the lead heading home Ever Banega's free-kick.
Inter responded to quickly with Diego Godin leveling the scoring just two minutes later but the second half would mean a defeat as Lukaku failed to convert a scoring chance but later deflected home Carlos' overhead kick.
Though Inter would finish the season without trophyless in spite of buying five Premier League players this season alone under Antonio Conte, they yet delivered a spectacular for having finished second in the Serie A for the first time since 2010-11.
"This squad are great. They believe in it, what they work on, and what they transmit," said Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui. "Even if we hadn't won I'd still love these guys, but today we take the prize. We have always believed."
The Spaniards were described as Europa League final match specialists by many analysts being that the club has not been beaten once in the final. They have won on every final match appearances.
