Champions League: Lyon Rout Manchester City To Reach Semi-Finals
Manchester City are now faced with a tough fate of early exit from Champions League after losing 3-1 to Lyon despite a comeback to levels scoring only for Moussa Dembele to net a double and handed victory to the French side.
Lyon have now booked their semi-final place against Bayern Munich who outshone Barcelona in an 8-2 blowout on Friday with Thomas Muller and Philippe Coutinho scoring twice in the rout.
After Maxwell Cornet broke the deadlock for Lyon in the first half, Raheem Sterling inspired City in a comeback by setting up Kevin de Bruyne with a cross that the Belgian smacked home for an equalizer.
The remaining minutes of the game spelled doom for City as Dembele later found the back of their net twice routing the Premier League side and sealing the Ligue 1 place in the Last Four.
City had chances of staging a comeback but Sterling could not found the goal to bring the side back into the game rather struck the ball over the top.
The elimination further jeopardizes Pep Guardiola's quest for silverware and will wrap up this season trophyless unlike last season when he went on winning streak of three domestic silverware for City.
"I don't want to complain or look for excuses, we are out. For the first 25 minutes or so we struggled to find our rhythm," said Guardiola. "We did create some chances in the second half but we also conceded two goals."
For eleven years, the Uefa Champions League title has eluded Guardiola who at Barcelona lifted the title twice - 2008/09 and 2010/11.
