Champions League: Cristaino Ronaldo Nets Double For Juventus As Lyon Advance To Last Eight
Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Juventus in a comeback to beat Lyon 2-1 by scoring but goals, unfortunately, it did not amount to them progressing to the quarter-finals as they were eliminated on aggregate by the Ligue 1 side.
Lyon came into the game with a 1-0 win over Juve from the first leg and did take the lead from a penalty converted Memphis Depay before the Portuguese forward led the comeback for the Italians.
Ronaldo scored the first goal converting the penalty offense committed by Depay for getting his hands to Pjanic's free-kick in the box late in the first half. On their return from break, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner doubled the lead with a 20-yard shot that beat the Lopes to the goal.
Though those efforts failed to see Juve through to the quarter-finals, the two goals extended Ronaldo's goal tally in the Champions League to his 130th which is the all-time highest in the competition.
In the same vein, Premier League side Manchester City advanced to the Last 8 after a 2-1 win against Real Madrid with Raheem Sterling giving the side the lead and Gabriel Jesus scoring the winning after Karim Benzema equalized for the Spaniards.
"It is the victory of a group. We wanted to be in Lisbon," said Lyon manager Rudi Garcia. "I have been here a few times with Roma. Juventus are the best team in Italy, a team that wanted to win the Champions League and have an alien."
Lyon could not lift the French League Cup last weekend having lost to Paris Saint Germain in a penalty shootout - they held the Ligue 1 champions to a goalless draw.
They were in the seventh position when the season was canceled over the novel coronavirus pandemic. Apparently, they will need to will this competition to qualify for the Champions League next season.
