Belgian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Wins To End Mercedes' Three Years Drought At Spa
It was yet another Lewis Hamilton podium lead as he clinched his fifth race wins of the season at the Spa having controlled through the laps to the end in Mercedes' one-two win. Today's race brings career wins to a total of 89.
Mercedes has for three years not won a race at the Spa but Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc who was the race defending winner, stood no chance at contesting for the podium neither could his teammate Sebastian Vettel as the duo finished in P15 and P14 respectively.
Valterri Bottas gave a serious chase at Hamilton and despite delivering the fastest pace for the second time at Lap 38, he yet remained in the trail by +5sec behind the six-time champion who maintained the lead despite complaining about his tyres with three Laps remaining.
The Finns driver finished the race as the second-fastest in +8.44sec behind Hamilton and in the third place was Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
"It wasn't the easiest of races. The tyres temperatures were slowly dropping. It was a bit of a struggle," Hamilton recalled if feared another suffering another British GP experience. "I know it's not what everyone always want to see - the Mercedes at the front - bit it's an incredible mentality we have."
Renault's Daniel Ricciardo followed his impressive performance from the qualifying session by finishing fourth at the final and following him was his teammate Esteban Ocon. It was the Australian's first top five appearance at the Spa in 10 years.
However, Hamilton keeps alive the quest for his F1 World championship title defense extending his lead in the driver standing to 157 points - 47 points clear nearest driver Max Verstappen.
