Styrian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton Wins In Mercedes' Season First One-Two Race Win
Lewis Hamilton opened his race-winning stat for the 2020 season by claiming his first race in Styrian Grand Prix in Mercedes' first one-two race win of the season.
Contrary to what the weather was at the qualifying, it was good weather and Hamilton delivered on that by controlling the race from the start finishing quickest by more than 13 seconds ahead of his teammate Valterri Bottas.
Max Verstappen was up for the finish behind Hamilton until Lap 67 when Bottas battled up with him to make the standings for a podium appearance in the second position after speeding by Red Bull Max Verstappen at Lap 67. Following Max was his teammate Alexander Albon.
Hamilton, however, improved his podium streak to 152nd which brings him three wins adrift the all-time race winner, Michael Schumacher.
"Firstly big thank you to my team. What a weird year but great to be back driving with this kind of performance," said Hamilton. "The team did a fantastic job, it was just for me to bring it home. I tried to get fastest lap but not going to get it with 40-lap-old mediums compared to someone with fresh tyres."
Ferrari had a bad race as both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, from the beginning of the race, crashed into each other at Turn 3, and that caused them safety tires. They both finished at the bottom of the table.
Speaking after the race, Sebastian admitted responsibility for Ferrari's failure and explained saying, "I was very surprised because I had the inside, and I wasn't expecting Charles to try something."
"So, yeah I don't think there was any space. It's obviously a big pity, and something we should avoid, but there was not much I could have done differently."
Hamilton claimed up to the second position in driver standings with 37 points, trimming down on Bottas' lead to five points while Lando Norris who finished in the fifth position followed in the third position with 26 points.
