NFL Franchise Washington Redskins To Drop Name, Logo
NFL franchise Washington Redskins have announced it will be dropping the name "Redskin" and the logo of the team following an outcry from their sponsors and the Native American community calling for the team's name to be changed for being racist.
FedEx, a sponsor who has a multi-million dollar deal with the franchise, demanded that the side changed the name which they considered to be racist otherwise they will be forced to cancel their sponsorship contract with the team.
Confirming the retiring of the name and logo, the franchise revealed in a statement that the decision was reached after it has had a "thorough review of the team's name" after it announced to do so on July 3.
"As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans, and community appraised of our thinking as we go forward," the franchise added in the statement. "Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review."
The courier company, FedEx, indicated its failing interest in the team on July 2 when it announced it will remove its signage from the stadium after the 2020 season unless the issue before the team is addressed.
