Premier League: Arsenal Restore Europa League Hope By Beating Southampton
Arsenal's youngsters showed the spectacular sides of the team in their 2-0 win against Southampton who will have their goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to blame for gifting out the opener. It is Gunners' first game win since the season restart from coronavirus pandemic long break.
McCarthy's poorly cleared a back pass struck Eddie Nketiah's left foot and bounced straight down to the goal only for the England starlet to run and get to for a tap into the net that put Arsenal in the lead in the 20th minutes.
Superb goalkeeping from Arsenal's Emiliano Martinez for saving two goal attempts especially that shot from closed range by Saints' winger Nathan Redmond which could have been an equalizer.
Saints lose Jack Stephens to a red card offense committed for a rough tackle on Aubameyang late into the game. That led to the Gunners' second goal following a free-kick after McCarthy parried Alexander Lacazette's shot to Joe Willock's reach for the finish in the 87th minute.
Early into the game, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang could have given Arsenal the lead following a fast break inspired by Granit Xhaka's cross but the Gabonese's shot clipped the crossbar and bound off to safety.
Gunners are no longer in the contest for a place in the Champions League qualification but have restored Europa League race hope with the away win over Southampton. The club's youngsters did the job for the Mikel Arteta-led side in this game.
