Formula One: Japan, Singapore, And Azerbaijan Races Called Off
The number canceled races in the 2020 season calendar have now extended to seven as Singapore, Japan, and Azerbaijan GP joined the list with reasons blamed on the Covid-19 pandemic.
With seven races already canceled in the regular 22-race calendar, the organizers of the sports are left with at least 15 races on the calendar. The season is expected to resume on July 3-5 in Austria - the country will be having a doubleheader hosting another racing event a week after.
In a statement released by F1, the cancelation was confirmed stating that the decision is in the best interest of sport as their promoters are faced with "different challenges" in their respective countries as they prepare to reopen the season.
"We have made significant progress with existing and new promoters on the revised calendar and have been particularly encouraged by the interest that has been shown by new venues in hosting a Formula 1 race during the 2020 season," said F1.
Just as Austria, Britain will also be getting a doubleheader as two races will be held at Silverstone and are amongst the 8-race revised calendar that was announced. Azerbaijan GP cancellation comes after the race was first rescheduled from its previous date June 7.
"These decisions have been taken due to the different challenges our promoters face in those countries," the statement added. "Ultimately, the health and safety of our contractors and their workers, spectators, Formula 1 crew staff, and volunteer Marshals is our number one priority and we thank everyone for their patience and unwavering support thus far."
