Coppa Italia Final: Cristiano Ronaldo Criticised For Juventus' Defeat To Napoli
Cristiano Ronaldo has come under criticism for Juventus' shock exit from the Coppa Italia following their defeat to Napoli on penalties on Wednesday night. He has been slammed by former Italian striker Lucas Toni and his manager Maurizio Sarri for the trophy loss.
The retired Italian international, Lucas, singled out Ronaldo as the player to blame for Juventus' defeat citing his performance as the reason the team was denied the trophy. Napoli held the game to a goalless draw throughout both halves and claimed the victory in a 4-2 shoot out to win the silverware.
"The Portuguese is in difficulty physically and he can't even dribble a man," he pointed out speaking to RAI. " He's in the same shape as the others, like Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa, he is lacking the sharpness to do what works best for him."
Napoli beat Juventus to win their first trophy in six seasons
During the match that was played behind closed doors, Juve's first penalty attempt by Dybala was saved by Alex Meret and Danilo blazed the second attempt over the bar before Napoli's Arkadiusz Milik scored winning spot-kick for the side.
Juve's manager Maurizio Sarri blamed not only the five-time Ballon d'Or winner but the team altogether for a trophy they should have won, calling them out for "lacking sharpness" during the match which handed the Gennaro Gatuzzo-led team the slot for their first major trophy in six years.
"There is disappointment for the club, the players and the fans, but at this moment we cannot do much more because we are lacking sharpness," said Maurizio. "We were missing a few players and had to make some different choices to usual, because our fitness level are not optimal."
Had Juventus won the trophy, that could have been Ronaldo's 32nd career trophy and his second silverware in the league since his arrival from Real Madrid in 2018.
