Barcelona Title Race Suffers A Setback After Celta Vigo Forced Them To A Draw
Celta Vigo have dealt a blow to Barcelona's quest to regain the table after suffering a disappointing 2-2 draw in a game that technically should have gone the hosts' way anyways. Barcelona no risk sliding behind Real Madrid by two points if the Bernabeu side wins their game against Espanyol on Sunday.
Before Celta could cause a scare, Barcelona had moved up in the lead with Luiz Suarez heading on a free-kick from Lionel Messi. A fast break by the hosts later resulted in an equalizer by Fyodor Smolov with an assist from Lago Aspas' square pass in the 18-yard box.
The Uruguayan put Barca back in the lead with a brilliant finish from inside the box and the game leveled up from a superb finish by Aspas who curled the ball home from a free-kick with two minutes left to play.
It could have been worse for Barcelona should Nolito converted the scoring chance from a close range created for him from Denis Suarez's cross late into the game for the winning goal. In the first half, Celta's first goal should have come from Denis' through pass to Brais Mendes whose attempt at the goal struck the pole and bounced off.
Though Barcelona had the better share of the game dominance and that was not to mention that Celta did nearly win the game and were very offensive on the counter.
With the game ending in a draw, Barcelona have now continued to see the title race thrown open between them and Madrid. Unless a win, they stand to be thrown behind the Zinedine Zidane-led side in the table, forfeiting their bid to defend the title.
