UEFA Says European Season Will Finish In August

Uefa president Aleksander Cerefin has revealed that there is a "concrete plan" in place to ensure that all European competitions in this season are finished in summer.

Professional football games are gradually returning from the long break caused by the Covid-19 lockdown. German Bundesliga returned on Saturday but matches were played behind closed doors in compliance with the regulations.

Speaking to BeIN Sports, the governing body boss Cerefin explained that matches will be played "without spectators" when the European season resumes with the hope of finishing the season "in August".

"I can say that the European season will be finished, if everything is as it is now, in August," said Cerefin. "As things look now, I'm sure that we can finish the European season and this means Uefa competition."

Many domestic leagues are expected to start returning from June exept the French Ligue 1 and Dutch League which have been canceled following the countries' government directives that forced all professional sports to remain suspended until September.

Cerefin also expressed her confidence that the "majority" of domestic leagues will complete the season, and citing the case of Paris Saint Germain and Lyon, he added that European games will be moved to a "neutral" if the government policy of a country did not allow matches to be played.

On the potential challenges that PSG and Lyon could face playing their games in France, he explained: "If this is not possible, [they] will have to organize it at a neutral ground. If you cannot pay in your country, then you have to organize it at a neutral ground."
