Premier League Set To Return In June
The Premier League is expected to return to action in June behind close-doors after Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave the green light in his speech over the coronavirus pandemic lockdown on Monday.
In the 50-step guidelines given by the government on measures to ease the lockdown, step 2 of the plan revealed that all cultural and professional games will remain suspended behind close-door or not throughout the month of May.
Johnson that from 1 June "cultural and sporting event " will be permitted to be held "behind closed doors for broadcast while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact."
With the return of the league on 1 June, Liverpool will be able to complete their title-race which they are in the lead by 25 points over the nearest team Manchester City with nine games remaining. It will be Reds' first league title in 30 years and Jurgen Klopp's fourth silverware with the team.
The Prime went on to clarify that the reopening of sporting events is necessary to help boost "national morale" which is necessary to boost the economy as well as the well-being of the public. However, until there is a significant "reduction in numbers of infections," sporting grounds that host large crowds will remain behind closed doors.
Unlike the Premier League, Ligue 1 has already crowned Paris Saint Germain as the season champions on merit following a directive from Uefa that allows European leagues to decide on which team wins the title if the season can not be completed over the Covid-19 lockdown. The French government canceled all professional sporting events until September 1.
Ajax has been denied the Dutch Eredivisie league title after the season was canceled by the government and could not be crowned as champions as they are closely trailed by AZ Alkmaar.
