Daniel Ricciardo Recalls Losing Race To Lewis Hamiltion in Monaco
Monaco 2016 remained a race that Daniel Ricciardo could not forget easily for having to lose winning his first race ever to Lewis Hamilton, he confessed that the loss left him with "rage" that stayed with him two years.
Ricciardo forfeited the race not only because he pitted in Lap 36 but his team was late to put him back on the track, giving the way for Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton to speed past. Nico later dropped behind him but Hamilton kept on in pole.
At this time, the Australian who was driving for Red Bull and admitted that the memory of the race was hard to erase from his mind and lingered for years.
"Even four years on, I remember this day is so much detail," he expressed dissatisfaction in a diary posted on his social media channel on Thursday.
The race was such an agonizing one for Ricciardo that he lost two gears, suffered MGU-K failure resulting in loss of horsepower. In spite of that, he managed to push on and ward-off Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez to finish in the second position behind Hamilton.
"It's like a video in my mind. I can picture myself driving through the corner before the tunnel after that pit stop and I was so angry. I didn't want to talk to anyone afterward, I certainly didn't want any sympathy...It was just pure rage."
two seasons later, Ricciardo left Red Bull to join the French Racing team Renault and that lasted until this year when he replaced Carlos Sainz in McLaren after the Spaniard left the team to join replace Sebastian Vettel in Ferrari.
