Liverpool To Be Crowned Premier League Champions Following Uefa Directive
Liverpool are set to be crowned the champions of the 2019/2020 Premier League following a directive from Uefa that allows domestic leagues to decide winners of their respective league on "sporting merits" if the season can not be finished following the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.
Uefa released the statement on Thursday affirming that domestic leagues can legitimately end the season if their country's government rules against reopening of sporting events due to health and safety implications it holds for sports fans in this time of coronavirus pandemic.
The governing body maintained that the procedures adopted by football leagues executives in the continent must be such based on "objective, transparent, and non-discriminatory principles".
"National associations and Leagues should otherwise have the ability to decide the final position in their domestic competitions," Uefa added in the statement. "Having regard to the specific circumstances of each competition."
Reds, as a result, will end their league title drought which has lasted through 30 years as they were led the table comfortably by 25 points clear their nearest rivals Manchester City with just nine games remaining. Before the season was suspended over the Covid-19 pandemic, they have won 25 games with one draw and 1 loss to lead the table by 82 points.
Jurgen Klopp will be the first head coach to break the jinx for Reds and making it his fourth silverware for the side. Last season, the German manager led the club to win their first Champions League title since 2004/05 and wrapped up the year with Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup.
