Chelsea To Offer Olivier Giroud One-Season Contract Extension
As Olivier Giroud counts down to his contract expiration at Chelsea, the club is reportedly considering extending his contract rather than letting him leave as a free agent in summer.
The Frenchman whose contract, originally, was meant to expire on June 30, was linked to AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur in the last transfer window, however, Chelsea would rather keep him for yet another season. The extension will keep him at Stanford Bridge until June 2021.
Giroud was signed to Chelsea in £18 million deal from their London next-door neighbours Arsenal in January 2018. After 18 months deal ran out last summer, it was extended until the summer of 2020.
The 33-year-old won with the team the Europa League title under Maurizio Sarri in the 2018/2019 season but fell out of favour with Frank Lampard, who succeded Sarri, who stepped down to join Juventus.
Before this season's football suspension over coronavirus pandemic, Giroud could only get nine appearances in all competition. Since his arrival, he has scored 21 goals for Blues.
