2019/2020 Dutch Eredivisie Season Cancelled As Ajax Lose Winning Title
Ajax have lost the Dutch Eredivisie title bid over the cancelation of the 2019/2020 season following an announcement by Dutch FA on Friday.
Denying Ajax the league title was necessary as they are closely trailed by AZ on goal difference which according to a Uefa directive released on Thursday, allowed the FA not to crown them as the champions.
In a statement released by the governing body, it was stated that domestic leagues can decide on the 2019/2020 season champions on "sporting merit" based on a procedure that is "objective, transparent, and non-discriminatory principles".
"Unfortunately, with the cabinet's most recent corona measures, it has become impossible to complete the 2019/2020 of the professional football competitions in time," the Dutch FA (KNVB) said in the statement.
Since the league has been canceled, the FA revealed there will be no promotion to the Dutch Eredivisie neither will there be relegation. Also, Ajax and AZ have both qualified for a Champions League slot while Feyenoord, PSV, and Willem II qualify for the Europa League.
The KNVB confirmed that the decision was reached after consulting with every stakeholder in the league and as approved by the "Supervisory Board" and that they acted in "accordance with the UEFA guidelines. In relation to promotion and demotion, it has been decided not to promote and not to be demoted."
