Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Rescheduled To 2021
International Olympic Committee has announced the postponement of Games which was meant to be hosted in Tokyo, Japan in the summer, all for the reason of the Covid-19 virus pandemic.
The cancellation is following the withdrawal of countries like Great Britain, Australia, and Canada after calling for the Games to be suspended over the global health crisis which has claimed over 5,000 lives in Italy alone.
The IOC, eventually, yielded to the calls and its member, Dick Pound, announced that this year's events will not be happening in summer as scheduled.
During a phone interview with USA Today, Pound revealed that the decision was made "on the basis of the information" the body has gathered.
Dick explained further that, "The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know."
The Games suspension became official when the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe confirmed that he "proposed" to the IOC president Thomas Bach to postpone the events and he agreed with him on that.
"I proposed to postpone for a year," said Shinzo Abe. "And (IOC) president Thomas Bach responded with 100% agreement."
Announcing the new date, IOC confirmed in a statement that it will be held in the same City next year and "no later than in summer 2021."
