Rolland Garros 2020 Rescheduled To September

As most European countries are locked down over coronavirus pandemic, the organizers of the 2020 French Open have announced the cancellation of the tournament which was meant to hold in May.

The deadly bug has turned many busy cities in the continent into a ghost town as many were forced to work from home whilst some are staying indoors as a form of self-isolating from contracting the virus that has claimed well over 1,800 lives globally.

As many many sporting events are being canceled, the French tennis federation also announced the suspending of the tour until late summer between 20 September and 4 October on its website. It explained that the measure is taken with consideration to the health and safety of its employees and everyone at the tournament.

"The whole world is affected by the public health crisis connected with COVID-19," the statement reads. "In order to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved in the tournament, the French Tennis Federation has made the decision to hold the 2020 edition of Roland Garros from 20th September to 4th October 2020."

Indian Wells, likewise, has been postponed over the same health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Its cancellation was announced Monday last week without a new date announced.

"We have made a difficult decision in this UNPRECEDENTED situation," said the federation president, Bernard Giudicelli. "We are acting responsibly and must work together in the fight to ensure everybody's health and safety."
