Premier League: Liverpool Regain Winning Form By Beating Bournemouth At Anfield
Liverpool bounced back from defeat after their long unbeaten streak ended with a back-to-back loss and took down Bournemouth in a 2-1 victory at Anfield.
Reds, with the home win, recovered from conceding their first league game defeat after 18th successive wins to Watford by 3-0 last weekend which was followed by an exit from the FA Cup in a 2-0 loss to Chelsea.
Bournemouth gained an early lead from Callum Wilson's striker which was somewhat controversial for Jurgen Klopp as Wilson was considered to be in an offside position but flags stayed down and the referee upheld his strike from Jefferson Lerma's cross in the 9th minute.
It could have been worse for Reds but Adrian came to the rescue and palmed into safety Nathan Ake's header that nearly doubled the lead for Cherries. Roberto Firmino responded for Reds lashing a right-footed shot on the ball in a contest with Lewis Cook from inside the box saved by goalkeeper Ramsdale.
Reds later got an equalizer from a superb finish from Mohamed Salah with a square pass from Sadio Mane in the 25th minute. Virgil van Dijk delivered a well-aimed through ball to Mane for a fast break and the Sengalese raced on into the box, then lashed the ball into the net for the second goal eight minutes later.
Mohamed Salah the first Liverpool player to hit 20 goals in three straight seasons after Michael Owen. |
James Milner could have got the third for Reds from Salah's cross but tapped the aerial ball softly for Ramsdale's easy catch. Cherries had very little breathing space thereafter except the time Junior Stanislas drilled a well-forced shot at the goal, parried out by Adrian.
The victory extended Liverpool's home league game runs to 22 for the longest recorded in the Premier League for a top team. In the same vein, Salah recorded his 20th goal of the season making him the first Liverpool player to hit 20 goals in three straight seasons after Michael Owen.
Racing to lift the Premier League trophy is very much guaranteed for the Jurgen Klopp's side which they needed less than four wins to clinch, and that is the only domestic title within reach for them, not to mention the Community Shield which will be against the winner of the FA Cup.
