Nemanja Matic will remain at Manchester United for yet another season after the club activated a one-year extension clause in his contract to keep him.
An agreement to trigger the extension clause was reached on Tuesday after United talked to him about retaining him for a much longer time. Otherwise, he could have been free to leave on his contract expiration in summer.
Having secured an extension, the former Chelsea player who moved to Old Trafford in a three-year contract under Jose Mourinho, will continue with the side until summer 2021.
The Serb has for the last eleven games, he has been a favourite of his Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in making the team's starting lineups, getting nine straight starts in all competitions, none of which United conceded.
United are now fifth in the Premier League easing their chances of making a slot for a Champions League appearance next season as Manchester City stand to forfeit theirs following UEFA's two-season ban from all continental competitions for breaking financial fair play rules.
Also, Red Devils are still in the Europa League title and are halfway to reaching the quarter-finals after beating Austrian side LASK 5-0 in the first-leg tie.
