FA Cup: Manchester City Beat Sheffield Wednesday To Reach Quarter-finals
Manchester City remained on course for the second title after beating Wednesday 1-0 to reach the quarter-final of the FA Cup - a trophy they won last season in the domestic treble.
City continues to defile any impact the Uefa two-season ban from all European competition can have on them by defending the EFL Carabao Cup in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. Having moved up to the last eight of the competition, the Pep Guardiola-led side has yet two titles in view - the Champions League - for a domestic and European Cup treble.
Wednesday were fairly resilient on their turf and that did not mean City were without scoring chances as they on two attempts had two shots at the target clipping the crossbar - Benjamin Mendy and Nicolas Otamendi's attempt.
Sergio Aguero eventually stepped up to break the deadlock with a superb left-footed shot that bounced off Wildsmith's hands and landed behind him before rolling into the net. The Argentine brought his goal tally to 23 in all competition this season, making him the side's leading goalscorer in this term.
Though City are out of the Premier League title race which Liverpool are in a comfortable position to lift, having to have won the Carabao Cup and having another one in view can be nerves-relaxing for the side which has no hope of participating in the Champions League or any European competitions for now.
