Champions League: Tottenham Knocked Out By RB Leipzig
Jose Mourinho's first title bid with Tottenham Hotspur has come to an end as they were knocked out of the Champions League in a second-leg tie defeat to RB Leipzig.
The Germans claimed a 3-0 victory over Spurs during which Marcel Sabitzer scored a double to lead the side through to the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 4-0 having won the first by a lone goal.
Spurs' fate of elimination was already known by the first half of the game with Sabitzer scoring twice before half-hour of play. It was a bad day for Spurs' goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who was at the mercy of Sabitzer.
Hugo was caught off guard by the Germans' captain twice and the two occasions resulted in goals. Sabitzer drilled a 20-yard shot home from Timo Werber's pass for the first goal, and the second goal was a swift tap in from close range. The 25-year-old wasted no time making a finish.
Spurs did have their moment with Lucas Moura setting off Dele Alli for a strike inside the box but his shot was weak enough for Peter Gulacsi to catch. That was later followed by the Germans scoring the third by Emil Forsberg, who smacked a loose ball into the net from inside the box.
The English made it to the final of the Champions League last season, apparently, that motivation was not there today with the likes of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane not on the pitch for injury.
RB Leipzig dealt with Spurs' manager the heaviest defeat he ever suffered in the Champions League since 2015-16 at Real Madrid losing 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund.
