Champions League: Marcos Llorente Leads Liverpool's Defeat As Atletico Madrid Reach Quarter-Finals
Liverpool's quest to defend the Champions League title was met with a shocking end at Anfield where Atletico Madrid forced a 2-3 victory to qualify for the quarter-finals with Marcos Llorente scoring twice.
Having won the first-leg tie by 1-0, the Spaniards outclassed Reds in a comeback from two goals down by scoring three goals in the extra-time that canceled out Roberto Firmino's extra-time goal that should have kept the side through to the last-eight.
Both Llorente and Alvaro Morata who scored the three goals for Atletico came in as substitutes, the latter was subbed in the extra-time and assisted in the second goal before dunking in the winning goal in the added minutes to the extra-time.
Llorente leveled the scoring on aggregate lashing home a right-footed from Joao Felix's pass and threw Liverpool behind his team running a square pass from Alvaro Morata, jink Reds' defender Henderson and took a shot from there that beat Adrian for his second goal and Atletico led by 3-2 on aggregate.
The game witnessed an awful performance from Adrian otherwise it could not have been that bad for Liverpool, obviously, Allison Becker was missed in this game. Whatever it is they are out.
Roberto Firmino had put Liverpool in the lead before Marcos Llorente pulled back two goals for Atletico Madrid en route their exit from the Champions League |
From the start, Reds were hungry to get the victory and troubled the Spaniards a lot until Georgino Wijnaldum headed in the opening goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross. Atletico could have got an equalizer from Saul Niguel's header that beat Adrian to the goal but was ruled out for an offside position.
Before it all started to crumble down in the extra-time, Roberto Firmino had sealed a good chance for Reds tapping into a rebound after his header clipped the post following Wijnaldum's cross.
Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak was the key player in the game that saved the side from many attempts from Liverpool with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah coming close to get but stopped all his attempted shots at the target.
