2020 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Suspended Indefinitely
The organizers of the 2020 Azerbaijan Grand Prix has followed in the stead of their counterparts and called off the competition over the Covid-19 virus pandemic.
Race cancellations started when a member of the McLaren racing team was tested positive for the bug in Melbourne ahead of the 2020 Australian GP, which led to the team being quarantined in the city and the race canceled. The number of races canceled ever since has now reached eight.
The organizers of the Baku race explained that the decision was reached after consulting with the relevant officials and agreed to suspend the competition indefinitely.
In the statement released by the organizers, it explained that top on the priority is the "health and safety of the Azerbaijan people as well as all visiting F1 fans, staff, and championship participants."
They also called out to their fans to bear with them in this time of global health crisis and promised to announce a new date when the crisis is under control. However, they are monitoring the situation closely.
It added: "To that end, we will continue to work closely with Formula 1, the FIA and the Government of the Azerbaijan Republic to monitor the situation with a view to announcing a new date later in the 2020 season."
