Maria Sharapova Retires From Tennis
Former world number one Maria Sharapova has brought her tennis career to an end and she is waving "goodbye" to the career she debuted at the Australian Open in 2003.
"I'm new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis - I'm saying goodbye," she said announcing her retirement in an exclusive Vanity Fair publication on Wednesday.
The Russian and five-time Grand Slam winner had been struggling with a shoulder injury since and she did mention that as one of the reasons she has decided to call it quits, nevertheless, it was a tough decision to make and just walk away from the sport that she cherishes.
She described her 17 years long career as saying, "Looking back now, I realize that tennis has been my mountain. The path has been filled with valleys and detours, but the views from its peak were incredible."
Definitely, the 32-year-old had a couple of bumps during her career, aside from shoulder injury and having procedures done, she was ban for 15-month from the sport for doping. She did make a comeback but it has never been the same for her.
