Joshua Cheptegei Sets New Road World Record For 5km
Ugandan track and field athlete, Joshua Cheptegei, has won the Monaco Run 2020 and broke the previous record set for road world 5km by 27 seconds.
Cheptegui upset the record set by Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto after crossing the finish line in 12 minutes and 51 seconds, and Jimmy Gressier of France finished second in 13 minutes 18 seconds for a new European record.
"This is a really great (race)," said Cheptegui. "I had sub 13 minutes in my mind so when my legs felt good during the race I decided to really go for it. To take this many seconds off the record makes me very happy."
Likewise, it was a great day for Gressier, who broke the previous record held by Julien Wander for European record and British athlete Nick Goolab finished third in 13 minutes 27 seconds ahead of Mohamed Amine El Bouajaji from Morocco.
In December, Cheptegei, 23, broke the road world road set for 10km for 10 years at 26:38, unfortunately for him, he missed out on winning a medal at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil as he finished eighth in 5km and sixth in 10km.
