Gedson Fernandez Closes In On Loan Move To Tottenham, Joins Team In Training

Gedson Fernandez is inches away from completing his 18-month loan move to Tottenham Hotspurs following a deal agreement with Benfica and has been spotted in training ground with the English side.

Prior to Spurs securing a deal with Benfica, the Portuguese midfielder was also linked to an 18-month move to Chelsea with an option to retain him for £55 million but that will be if he completed 50 percent of league game appearance during his loan spell.

West Ham were also one of the clubs interested in the 21-year-old and with lesser conditions on league game appearance in the same loan duration than Chelsea. However, the Portuguese side favoured a deal with Spurs who offered to buy him out after his loan spell for £56 million.

Meanwhile, there was a massive release clause of £102 million in Fernandez's contract with Benfica but since he has dropped out of pecking order at the club and not getting enough game time as a result, the club decided to take out the clause to allow for his move.

As Spurs stand to lose Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan in summer and Moussa Sissoko also out for three months for having undergone surgery for a medical collateral ligament in his right knee, these necessitate the need for the Fernandez to fill in the gap left off by Moussa and upon the Frenchman's return, can make up for Eriksen's exit.
