Diddy Challenges Grammy To Be More Diversify, Transparent, Says "Black Music Is Not Respected"
The 2020 Grammy Awards ceremony is happening tonight but before the event will kick off, iconic hip hop star and Bad Boy Records owner, Sean 'Diddy' Combs, has something to clear off his mind regarding how the Academy perceives and treats black music especially the hip hop genre.
Diddy received this year's Grammy Salute to Industry Icon award on Saturday night. Least to expectations was that he used his acceptance speech to address the issues that he wanted to be addressed so that the hip hop genre can be respected as it should by the Academy.
"I'm speaking for all the artists and executives: in the great words of Erykah Badu," he said starting off the lengthy speech. '"We are artists and we are sensitive about our s**t." For most of us, this is all we've got. This is our only hope.'
In the rapper's opinion, Grammy does not really respect hip hop that much and other black music is not getting the deserved recognition either. However, not in music, he also pointed out that, this is something that reflects in the film industry and sports as well.
Challenging Grammy to be more diversify and transparent, he added, "For years we've allowed institutions that have never had our best interests at heart to judge us. And that stops right now."
The 50-year-old is a one-time winner of the Grammy in12-time nominee and that was his tribute song for his late friend and rapper The Notorious BIG, "I'll Be Missing You' in 1998.
