Barcelona Sack Ernesto Valverde, Replaced With Quique Setien

Barcelona has sacked its head coach, Ernesto Valverde, bringing his three-year reign at Nou Camp to an abrupt end and replaced with Quique Setien following the team's unacceptable performance which led to the club's executives holding a meeting a Saudi Arabia.

The 55-year-old had a successful spell at the club winning two Spanish La Liga with the team but failed to achieve winning the club's coveted Champions League. During his reign, Barcelona did not reach the final of the competition which they last won in 2015.

Barca are in a close contest in the league title race with Real Madrid who tied on points with the defending champions and also won the Supercoppa de Espana in penalties after a goalless draw with Atletico Madrid in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Ernesto fate had been hanging in the balance since Barca lost 2-3 to Atletico in the semi-finals of the Supercoppa de Espana as the club's executive held a meeting while the game was on-going discussing his future. There were speculations that the club's former midfielder is top on the priority list to take over from Ernesto but that failed to happen as Quique was appointed instead.
