Barcelona In Contact With Xavi Hernandez As Club Executives Discuss Ernesto Valverde's Future
It is apparent that Ernesto Valverde is just at the end of his reign at Barcelona as the club's executives reportedly met with the club's veteran Xavi Hernandez in Doha for talks over appointing the legend as their new head coach.
Barca dropped out of Spanish Super Cup in a 2-3 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Thursday and while the game was going on, Forbes learned the club's executives Eric Abidal and Oscar Grau held a meeting with Xavi in Saudi Arabia. It is believed Valverde's future at Nou Camp might be decided as soon as Monday.
However, there are mix-feeling about Valverde's fate at the club as some insiders believed the 55-year-old might still remain at the club as his players like Lionel Messi and Luiz Suarez are strongly in support of him whilst another revealed the team's defeat to Atletico did not instigate the meeting of the board directors rather they had been scheduled for days before that game.
"The meeting of the board of directors, scheduled for next Monday, has already been set for days according to these sources of the club," Forbes quoted an insider Fernando Polo as saying. "Has not been precipitated in any case by the defeat in the Spanish Super Cup."
The former Barca midfielder spent 17 years at the club and contributed immensely to the team winning eight La Liga titles, four Champions League titles, three Copa del Rey titles, and two UEFA Super Cups during which he made 767 appearances with 85 goals.
