Australian Open: Wang Qiang Knocks Out Serena Williams

Chinese player Wang Qiang stunned former champion, Serena Williams, with an early elimination in the third round that cut short her bid for a record-tying feat of 24th Grand Slam title with record-holder Margaret Court.

Serena fought back from a set down to claim the second set in a tiebreak but Wang remained resilient holding off the American from a rally to clinch victory in three sets, 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5.

"I honestly didn't think I was going to lose that match," said Serena who was not pleased with her performance and did complain about her shot and errors she made.

"I made a lot of errors. I didn't hit any of those shots in New York or in general in a really long time. I just made far too many errors to be a professional athlete today."

Recalling the pair's last meeting in New York at the US Open in September, Wang only lasted for 44 minutes against Serena who eased through straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to eliminate the Chinese player in the quarter-final. She made it through to the final only to be denied her quest for 24th Grand Slam title by Bianca Andreescu in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
